Religious Trauma Counselling

RELIGIOUS TRAUMA Counselling

Our counsellors support folks who have experienced trauma as a result of being connected to and/or raised in a religious community, high control environment and/or cult. Our therapists have both personal and professional experience in navigating the nuance of personal faith histories, spirituality, and oppressive experiences within certain communities.  Our team has lived experience within Evangelical, Christian Fundamentalist, Catholic, Muslim and Jewish Communities, and we support one another in finding parallels and understanding differences within and between these worlds.  We are ever-growing in our understanding of how intersectionality contributes to a wide variety of experience that exists for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, queer, transgender, intersex and non-binary people within religious communities.  This diversity of experience includes and is not limited to ethnic and cultural background, gender, class, age, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, race, religion, relationship status, physical or mental abilities, and socioeconomic status.

These are some areas that are often explored:

  • Loss of family, friends and communities

  • Internal struggles of dissonance and difficulty trusting one’s self

  • Anxiety and fear of eternal damnation

  • Unlearning indoctrination

  • Guilt, shame and struggles to affirm one’s self

  • Exploring spirituality and faith outside of the religious norm

  • Distress associated with judgement and disappointment

  • Exploring the impact of purity culture, sex-negative discourses and/or Christian, colonial, patriarchal discourses around sexuality and desires

  • Supporting folks who struggle between their gender or sexuality and their religious or cultural beliefs; this includes people who identify somewhere within or around two-spirit, lesbian, gay, queer, transgender, and non-binary communities.

  • Exploring culturally-appropriate healing practices that resonate on an individual level
