Val Lange is an arts and somatic based Registered Clinical Counselor with a Master’s Degree in Expressive Arts Therapy and Psychology. Val holds an intersectional viewpoint, grounded in feminism and anti-oppression. She has spent the past five years working in front-line, anti-violence agencies supporting women and genderqueer people escaping violence. In her practice, she draws upon experience in relational therapy, attachment therapy, parts-work, family constellations, expressive arts therapy and hakomi, a form of somatic psychotherapy. She provides support for life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, religious trauma, addiction, eating disorders, psychedelic integration, gender identity and sexual orientation explorations, and relationships of all configurations.
I grew up in a divided household with one parent evangelical and the other non-religious. Much of my childhood and teenage years were spent going back and forth from one house to the next which were not always safe spaces. In my late teens I had a full emotional shut-down and went from being a very active and social teenager to not being able to function or to get out of bed. Lacking support from my family environment, I left home while still in high school. It took over a decade to heal fully from addiction and eating disorder which resulted from this period. Through creative arts, meditation, somatic embodiment practices, working with counselors who supported me, and owning my queer sexuality, I was able to heal from the wounds of my childhood and move into a new kind of vibrancy.
These days I live on Cortes Island (Klahoose, Homalco, and Tla’amin Territories) with my partner and our two black cats. I have a massage therapy practice and teach aerial yoga alongside an active homesteading lifestyle. I am ever growing in my humanness, continue to challenge my own understandings and truly enjoy the unfolding of self-discovery both in myself and in those I work with.
As an expressive arts therapist, I love to work from an arts-based approach. If you are artistically inclined or are curious about how the arts can enhance a therapeutic session, feel free to ask.
